Trenches Talk: Holmgren Hunting Quarterback

Post by Washington Redskins jerseys
The Browns are attempting to acquire a quarterback and have been engaged in trade talks with more than one team, Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Apparently, the Browns have concluded they are more likely to upgrade the position through a trade than via free agency.
Team president Mike Holmgren and GM Tom Heckert have been linked to quarterbacks on their former teams—Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck(notes) and Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb(notes) or Kevin Kolb(notes).
According to the Plain Dealer, the Browns are soon expected to cut QB Derek Anderson(notes), who is owed a $2 million roster bonus on March 19. It also wouldn’t be a surprise to see the team deal Brady Quinn(notes). …
The Jets released CB Lito Sheppard(notes) after one disappointing and injury-plagued season. Two other cornerbacks with a lot of starting experience also are unrestricted free agents. The Lions released Phillip Buchanon(notes) and Marlin Jackson(notes) became a free agent when the Colts didn’t tender him an offer. … Hours before the free-agency period began, the Redskins cleaned out a host of high-priced veterans, including WR Antwaan Randle El(notes), G Randy Thomas(notes) and RB/KR Rock Cartwright(notes). CB Fred Smoot(notes), DT Cornelius Griffin(notes), RB Ladell Betts(notes) and QB Todd Collins(notes) also were released in the first major moves under new coach Mike Shanahan.
The Redskins need to get younger after a 4-12 season, and Thursday’s moves point the team in that direction. They are again expected to be aggressive in the free-agent market. …
The Falcons re-signed CB Brian Williams(notes) to a one-year contract. An eight-year veteran, Williams joined the Falcons Sept. 6 and started five games at left cornerback before a season-ending knee injury. The Falcons also announced that LS Mike Schneck(notes) has retired. …
The Chiefs re-signed OLB Mike Vrabel(notes), hoping to get another year of solid play from the 13-year veteran. Vrabel started 14 games in 2009, with 65 tackles and two sacks. Vrabel, who will turn 35 before the season, was acquired in 2009 from the Patriots. …
The NFL has lost a last-minute bid to have a federal court hear a lawsuit by two Vikings facing suspension for using a banned substance. U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson on Thursday denied the league’s request to move the lawsuit filed by DTs Kevin Williams(notes) and Pat Williams(notes) out of state court, where a trial is to begin Monday.
