PATRIOTS NOTEBOOK;Reed, Crumpler visit Gillette

Post by Minnesota Vikings jerseys
The Patriots yesterday hosted two veterans at positions of need, welcoming tight end Alge Crumpler and receiver Josh Reed at Gillette Stadium.
The visits, confirmed by separate league sources, are positive developments if the team intends to sign them.
Crumpler is a potential replacement for blocking tight end Chris Baker, a surprising cut last Thursday. At one point in his career, Crumpler was one of the league's finest receivers, averaging 53 catches and 719 yards with six touchdowns from 2004 to 2007 with the Falcons.
But Crumpler is mostly a blocker now, helping pave the way last year in Tennessee for 2,000-plus yard running back Chris Johnson. An NFL personnel guru who worked with Crumpler described him as ``an excellent leader and locker room guy.''
As for Reed, he's a former third receiver with the Bills who coach Bill Belichick has often praised. Reed, the former LSU second-round pick, was described by Belichick as ``very hard to tackle.''
Green hits Denver
Defensive end Jarvis Green has bided his time in free agency, searching for the right fit rather than racing toward a finish line. The hope, his agent Albert Elias said last week, was for that first visit to be the magical one.
With that in mind, Green visited Denver last night, Elias said. That fact gives coach Josh McDaniels' team the upper hand on signing Green.
The replacement in 2009 for the traded Richard Seymour, Green contributed 233 tackles and 28 sacks over his eight-year Patriots career. He is hoping to thrive as an interior, nickel pass-rusher.
Watson in Seattle
While the Pats hosted one tight end, their former first-round draft pick Benjamin Watson traveled to Seattle yesterday to shop himself to the Seahawks.
Watson, who isn't likely to re-sign with the Patriots, also has a visit set up in Cleveland, according to Pro Football Talk. . . .
Rookie cornerback Darius Butler will accept the Ed Block Courage Award tonight in Baltimore on behalf of quarterback Tom Brady.
