Peppers Makes Bears First Stop

First stop for the NFL’s top unrestricted free agent? Julius Peppers(notes) has arranged a Friday visit with the Bears, the Chicago Tribune reports. Apparently, he will be able to meet Chester Taylor(notes) while in the Windy City.
Peppers has a "strong interest" in joining Brian Urlacher(notes), Lance Briggs(notes) and Tommie Harris(notes) on the Chicago defense, ProFootballTalk.com says. However, the Redskins are believed to be out of the running for Peppers, but …
"Something happened" to put the Bears in the driver’s seat. It could be that Peppers simply wants to play for Rod Marinelli, and that he wants to avoid a 3-4 defense. While speculation swirls about Peppers, the former Panthers terror who could be the first big-name free agent signed Friday, Taylor is intriguing because of how he would fit in an offense run by Mike Martz. Taylor is a good receiver out of the backfield. The knock, of course, is Taylor’s penchant for slippy fingers.
Meanwhile, ProFootballTalk.com also says the Bears have dropped out of the bidding for the top defensive back on the market. Safety Antrel Rolle’s(notes) asking price of $8 million per season appears too rich for the Bears’ taste. Best bets as of early Friday morning were for Rolle to join the Giants or Dolphins.
According to PFT:
It’s worth noting that New York’s interest in Rolle could indicate some serious concern about Kenny Phillips’(notes) recovery. And Miami’s interest doesn’t sound good for Gibril Wilson’s(notes) future with the Dolphins.
